The platform “Energy Transition” advises to store the Dutch and German CO2 emission in underground empty gas fields. Reducing the CO2 emission is not possible without this underground storage, says Catrinus Jepma, professor Durable Energy in Groningen and Chairman of the platform.

He claims that near The Netherlands, the highest emission of CO2 takes place and The Netherlands have the biggest CO2 storage facility in western Europe, pointing to the empty gas fields in Slochteren. It is extremely safe to store CO2 in those gas fields, hence no gas ever escaped from it, so CO2 would not either.

Currently, in the German city Ketzin, the first trial project for underground CO2 storage has commenced. The CO2 emission of a large powerplant, will be stored underground at a depth of 1800 meters. The project’s goal is to reduce the global warming.
CO2 emission is one of the main factors that causes global warming, so this would be a good measure.

They hope that this project will be the basis of 10 to 12 trial projects for CO2 storage before 2015.

See no evil, hear no evil would be an appropriate line to this story.

Cheers,

Roel
