Wind power will get cheaper than Nuclear power. The price for both energy sources is already comparible, but the price of Nuclear power will get higher because additional costs will be charged to pay for the prevention of terrorist actions. Windpower will be cheaper due to technical enhancements.
This conclusion comes from "Energy Research Centre Netherlands" (ECN) . The ECN investigated this through an order of the Social Economic Board (SER). Lucas Reijnders, Professor in Environmental knowledge, said this in the newspapers in reaction of the findings that there would not be enough space for Windmills to make Nuclear power unnecessary. "We should prevent building Nuclear powerplants, due to the Nuclear waste and the risks for terroristic actions" said Professor Reijnders. "We also should invest in windmills at sea, so they will be affordable too" he said. Head-teacher reactorphysics Jan Leen Kloosterman, does not want to ignore Nuclear power. He says; "I am for Windmills, but if we also build a new Nuclear plant, it can provide twelve percent of the energy need". He also thinks that terroristic attacks are not such a big threat. "The security of the Nuclear plants is so good that it would be the last thing to choose to plan a terroristic attack" Employersorganisation VNO-NCW is said to be pro-Nuclear power, but was not willing to react on the report yet. Despite this, Nuclear power still is the cheapest and most reliable power source they say. The concept-report is part of an investigation of the SER commission "Future energy supply" which should answer the question if The Netherlands should provide extra energy. Besides this, my opion is that The Netherlands should put some more effort in energy reduction technologies and investigate more on how to deal with Nuclear waste. If the world would come up with a solution for that, the need for energy would have a good solution. Even more, new technologies to supply energy should be taken into account too. Examples are energy from watercurrents and bio-energy. Cheers, Roel |
