The emission of CO2 (carbon dioxide) has been decreased for the second year in a row now. Last year, the emission was 208 billion kilo's, of which the major part was CO2. This has been reported today by the "Dutch central bureau for statistics" and the "environment and nature plan bureau".
It is almost three percent lower than the level of 1990, the year the Kyoto protocol started. According to this protocol, the Dutch have to decrease the emission of greenhouse gasses with six percent every year, measuring against the level of 1990. A part of this decrease can be realized abroad. In 2005, the emission came for the first time below the level of 1990. Reduction The reductions of 2005 and 2006 are mainly caused by decreasing the emission of CO2. The most important decrease of the emission of CO2 has been realized at the production of electricity. Although more electricity has been used, the production in The Netherlands reduced. Also the emission of methane, laughing gas (nitrous oxide) and Fluor gasses reduced. The part of durable energy increased the previous year with 2.7 percent. Also the relatively warm winters added to this reduction of the emission, because less natural gas was needed.
