Amsterdam to become a green ICT city E-mail

On-Off Amsterdam wants to take measures to turn the huge ICT-sector green. The capital city is the center of intercontinental data traffic and has a lot of  ICT companies, data centers and related computer, internet and media companies.

Because of the increasing internet usage of these companies, the energy use has increased a lot the last few years. This is bad for the environment. With the project ‘Green IT’ the city is aiming at increasing the use of modern cooling techniques, more efficient hardware and re-use of the warmth that the hardware creates. The potential to reach emission reduction in the sector is huge. A lower energy use means less emission of CO2.

The Project

The project is one of the proposals in the climate vision of the City of Amsterdam. The capital wants the emission of carbon dioxide in 2025 reduced with 40 per cent. Not all projects in the climate vision will be social and economically feasable. The municipality have established a short-list of measures which can be carried out the coming years.

This way the municipality wants an urban subsidy which allows the people from Amsterdam to place a solar energy system on their roof with discount. Provisionally there is money for two hundred systems, but the city still tries to find financing for a strong extension of it. Amsterdam is also looking for methods to have households participate in large or small-scale wind projects.

Toll levy

The list of possible measures regarding CO2 reduction varies from toll levy for the centre of Amsterdam to freight trams on the water. Because of climate coalitions between companies, institutions, knowledge institutes, civilians and the municipality, this has to result in realistic measures.
